At sunrise this morning, a wreath-laying ceremony was held at the Odessa Police Department to honor Officer Scott Stanton Smith who died 35 years ago today.
Back in 1987, the 25-year-old officer was responding to a burglary call when he was involved in a motorcycle accident. Two days after the accident, his wife found out she was pregnant with their second child. He spent six months on life support before passing away in 1988.
The wreath will remain at OPD's Memorial Statue until sundown, when the Honor Guard will return to take it down. If you wish to pay your respects, please stop by before then.
Officer Scott Smith will never be forgotten. End of Watch: February 6th, 1988.
