Governor Abbott has declared January 13th as Amber Alert Awareness Day, in remembrance of the 1996 abduction and subsequent murder of 9-year-old Amber Hagerman in Arlington, Texas. Amber stands for “America’s Missing Broadcast Emergency Response. The purpose of the Amber Alert Program is to locate and bring home missing children.
OPD has partnered with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (missingkids.org) and the Texas Center for the Missing (centerforthemissing.org) to combat Human Trafficking. The Texas DPS app has an entire section dedicated to Human Trafficking Awareness and the NCMEC provides a “Safety Central” app, which also has several "Child Safety" resources.
